Finding and Choosing an Attorney

This website can help you find legal representation. Select a practice area below, then select your location. You can find a lawyer by city or zip code, and you can choose to specify a search radius. There is no charge for listing attorneys or for the public, and no personal information is collected.

You should interview prospective candidates when seeking legal help. After narrowing the attorney list to two or three, contact the attorneys and request a face-to-face meeting. If you outline your needs in advance, many lawyers are willing to meet you for a half hour consultation at no charge. You should ask the attorney whether s/he charges a fee for an initial consultation. During this meeting pay attention to your comfort level with the attorney.

Need help Choosing a Specialist?
See Marcela Devivo's article A Quick Guide to Lawyers for a brief description of some of the most common areas of specialization in legal practice. Some questions you should ask all prospective lawyers:

What is your experience in this area of law?
How will I be able to contact you?
Who can I talk to if you are not available?
Approximately how long will it take to complete my legal work?
What are your rates and how often will you bill me?

Locate Attorneys by Specialty, City, Zip CodeMany people are uncomfortable talking about fees, but they must be discussed with your attorney early in your relationship with him/her. Legal advice does not come cheaply. Lawyers commonly charge for their work on an hourly basis. Fees vary by region, by complexity of the case, and by the experience of the lawyer. Rates may range from $60 to $300 and more per hour. They may also offer a "flat rate" for certain types of work such as drafting a will or trust. After selecting an attorney, get any agreement in writing before legal work has started.

If the attorney wants to represent you, expect that he/she will go through an educational process. Be honest. Everything you tell him/her during your meeting is subject to the attorney-client privilege, so honesty is in your best interest. It’s much better for the attorney to know the bad things up front rather than be surprised later.

Note: Choose this option if you can't decide, or if your search produces no results. However, some firms may only practice in specialized areas of law so they will not appear in the results. Also, some legal specialists typically only practice in larger metropolitan areas, so you may also want to choose to search the nearest major city if you live in a smaller town. Most of the major categories represent areas of practice that include at least a thousand attorneys in the database.

Advanced Search Options
There are many important areas of legal expertise that are practiced by relatively few attorneys, for example, age discrimination (although many attorneys handle general discrimination issues). It may be difficult to find a specialist like this near you. If you would like to search for a legal expert whose area of expertise isn't covered in the categories above, you can try the keyword search - remember that if a specialty area is relatively rare, you may need to specify a large search radius or to search for results in the largest metropolitan area close to you in order to get results.
